Sanjay Mathur, IPS, on promotion as Inspector General of Police assumed office as the new Commissioner of Police, Madurai City, here on Monday.

Prior to this posting, Mr. Mathur, an engineering graduate, was the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Dindigul Range). A native of Jaipur, Rajasthan, he belongs to the 1994- IPS batch. He had his stints as ASP, Tirunelveli, SP, Madurai, and on deputation in Government of India posting as Assistant Director (Intelligence Bureau), and Joint Deputy Director (IB). He had undergone a three-week training programme in the U.S. Recently, Mr. Mathur received President's Police Medal for meritorious service.

With Chithirai celebrations under way, the police would give top priority to bandobust arrangements for the safety of devotees. Top priority would be given to minimise traffic congestions, he told reporters in a brief chat.

Mr. Mathur took charge from the outgoing officer P. Kannappan who has since been posted as Inspector General of Police (North zone).
