Couple held on cheating charge

Mysur: A couple, who was on the run after allegedly cheating several people of their hard-earned money by promising residential sites and other incentives, was finally arrested by the city police on Saturday. Satyanarayana (56) and his wife Anuradha (49), who used to stay in Chamundipuram in the city, had collected about Rs. 2 crore from several people by promising sites or double the money in a short period of time, the police said. Vijayalakshmi, a resident of the city and one of the victims, paid the couple Rs. 11.4 lakh over a year ago. But when she suspected the intentions of the accused, she asked for a refund. The accused then gave her a cheque, which bounced, a police official investigating the matter.

Soon, many others, who had given the couple their money, began asking for a refund. “Most of the victims, who had given the accused their money, knew each other. The amount given varied from Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 3 lakh to over Rs. 10 lakh and even Rs. 90 lakh,” said a police official.The couple initially gave the victims cheques and promissory notes. Later, to dodge the victims, they changed two or three houses in Chamundipuram before absconding. Thirteen persons have filed a cheating complaint against the couple.The police, who began investigation into the case about a fortnight ago, finally traced the couple to a house in Kathriguppe in Bengaluru’s Banashankari on Saturday.
