Police impose fine on speeding buses

Erode: In the aftermath of a car accident earlier this week near Thindal that claimed two lives, the Police Department on Friday carried out surprise checks on speeding vehicles using a newly procured speed-radar gun. Fines were imposed on the speeding buses and those using air horns during the operation under the direct supervision of Superintendent of Police M.R. Sibi Chakravarthy. The speeding buses that were fined included a TNSTC bus, the SP said.

Police training for private security guard aspirants

Erode: Thirty-three women were among the 142 aspirants who assembled at the Armed Reserve Campus here today for a 21-day training programme for private security guard jobs.

Police evolving mechanism to prevent house break-ins

Erode: In view of house break-ins reported at periodic intervals in and around the city, the police department is contemplating a mechanism to monitor locked houses, according to the sources. Though locked houses may not be more in number since the summer vacation has come to an end, the police are reportedly thinking on lines of introducing a mechanism for residents to keep the nearest police station informed about their travel plans and duration of their absence.

Man murders son’s lover

Erode: A man reportedly murdered his son’s lover at Kollampalayam in Chithode limits on Sunday. Police sources said Eashwaran (48) murdered Sathya (24) because he was opposed to the love affair between her and his son Ragunath (24), both of whom were employees of a private firm. The accused had allegedly hacked Sathya to death. She is said to belong to a community other than the one to which the accused belonged.

Flag march held in Erode

Erode: Personnel of Central Reserve Police Force, Tamil Nadu Special Police and local police took out the pre-election flag march in the city and other parts of the district on Tuesday. Superintendent of Police M.R. Sibi Chakravarthy inaugurated the flag-march at the District Police Office.

Case against AIADMK functionary

Erode: The police have registered a case against Ashok Kumar, an AIADMK functionary of Modakurichi from whose residence at Kaspapettai a flying squad monitoring election expenditure confiscated Rs. 51.28 lakh unaccounted money earlier this week.

Youth murders twin brother

Erode: Fisticuffs between twins resulted in the death of one of them at their residence in Medical Nagar near Thindal on Sunday. According to sources, Philip and Andrews (28) were quarrelling after consuming liquor when the latter, in a fit of rage, hit the former's head with a club. Philip succumbed to injuries. The Erode Taluk police have secured Andrews.

2 dead, 13 hurt as buses collide

Erode: Two passengers of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus died and 13 others were injured when the vehicle was involved in a collision with a private bus at Gangapuram in Chithode limit on Sunday. The victims were Sandhya (17) and Kittusamy (50), passengers of the bus plying from Coimbatore to Salem. The injured included the conductor of the private bus Ramu. The injured were rushed to the Government Headquarters Hospital.

Over 900 arrested to prevent communal tension

Over 900 members of Periya Mariamman Temple Land Retrieval Movement, including about 600 women, were arrested on Thursday when they attempted to stage a novel protest by cooking ‘Pongal’ on a disputed land.  The land is currently in the possession of the Church of South India (CSI).

Erode: Woman Killed son

Erode: Forty-year-old Rajammal of Nallagoundampalayam murdered her teenage son by throwing a boulder on his head on Thursday night and surrendered before police on Friday. Rajammal killed Selvaraj in a fit of rage unable to tolerate his habit of demanding money, police said. The Gobichettipalayam police registered a case and had her remanded in judicial custody.
