43 child workers saved from BT cotton field

Salem: As many as 43 child labourers, who toiled  in BT Cotton farms at Athur in Salem, were rescued on Thursday.  A team of officials led by labour inspector N. Thirunathan, district child protection officer A. Devaki, Unicef child welfare advisor P. Balamurugan and revenue officials  conducted intensive raids on seven BT cotton farms and rescued 43 children employed there.

Three held for damaging buses

Salem: The police arrested three persons, said to be AIADMK sympathizers, on charges of hurling stones and damaging the windscreens of a couple of TNSTC buses near Kondalampatti. The buses were proceeding to Akkarapettai and Parapatti when the incident took place. A. Karthik (22), A. Selvaraj (40) and A. Prabu (23) were taken into custody.

Traffic diversion in Salem to reduce congestion

City Police have announced diversion of traffic within city limits from Thursday, following traffic congestion witnessed near the railway level crossings at Mulluvadi and Cherry Road during the operation of trains. City Police have converted Bretts Road and Cherry Road into one way.

Two held, gold jewellery recovered

Salem: A special team of the city police arrested two persons and recovered 32.25 sovereign gold jewellery and three motorcycles, all worth Rs. 7 lakh, here on Sunday. With increase in chain-snatching incidents in the city, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) S. Prabakaran formed a special team led by P. Ashokan, Assistant Commissioner, North (Crime). The team while on vehicle check in Gorimedu on Sunday tried to intercept a two-wheeler.

Lack of synchronisation of traffic signals causes congestion

Salem: City’s two arterial roads, Omalur Main Road stretch from Five Road Junction to Collectorate and Sarada College Road from Five Road Junction to Hasthampatti here witness heavy traffic on any given day. But what is troubling the commuters is that to reach Hasthampatti from Five Road Junction, which is merely a two k.m stretch, it may a take more than 10 minutes.

Road safety campaign

Salem: To create awareness about rules and regulations to be followed while on the road, a road safety campaign was held here recently. It was organised by the Salem District Police and Home Guards, along with Mahendra Educational Institutions. Superintendent of Police R. Sakthivel flagged off the rally in the presence of the Managing Director of the Institutions Maha Ajay Prasad.

Ganja seized from woman

Salem: The city police arrested a 55-year-old woman and seized 20 kg ganja from her at New Bus Stand here on Wednesday night. Based on information, the police patrolled the premises and found a woman with a bag, standing in a suspicious manner. Inquiry revealed that Lakshmi was from Dindigul and was carry ganja from Andhra Pradesh. She was to deliver the product to an agent in Tirupur. Pallapatti police registered a case and arrested her.

Sandalwood worth Rs. 10 lakh seized

Salem: Forest officials arrested three persons and seized Rs. 10 lakh worth sandalwood being transported in a car here on Wednesday night. During a vehicle check near Ponnammapet, Ammapet police intercepted the car and found 145 kg of sandalwood in it. Since those in the car gave unconvincing answers, they were taken to the police station.

Counterfeit currency seized

A team of CBCID officials from Coimbatore has taken into custody two persons from Andipalayam in Tiruchengode (Namakkal District) on charges of possessing and circulating counterfeit currency. The police said that the value of the counterfeit currency seized was under investigation. Sources said that counterfeit currencies in denominations of Rs. 500 and Rs. 100 worth about Rs. 1 lakh was seized, apart from a two-wheeler, a four-wheeler and laptop.
