One held for selling pirated VCDs

Cuddalore: The police arrested Suresh (21) of Ko.Adanur near Vriddhachalam on the charges of openly selling the pirated video-compact discs of newly released Tamil movies on Wednesday. The police sources said that Suresh was selling the VCDs stacked in a push cart at a public place near the Palakkarai road junction. Suresh had quite a number of VCDs of the latest releases such as “Anjan,” “Velai Illa Pattadhari” and “Irukku aana Illai” at his disposal.

Four arrested for attacking conductor

Cuddalore: The police on Sunday arrested four persons on the charges of physically assaulting a conductor of a private bus. Police said that on Saturday Sivakumar (35) of Salai Agaram near Koliyanur was on duty in the private bus plying on the Villupuram — Panruti route. When the bus stopped at Payithambadi a passenger named Sarathi boarded the bus. But he kept on standing in the footboard.

Five held for indulging in illicit liquor trade

Cuddalore: The police arrested five persons, including two women, for indulging in illicit liquor trade at three places in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts. The Chidambaram police secured three persons namely Raju (36) of Kothangudi, Saravanan (24) of Adhivaraganallur and Rajendran (32) of Anna Nagar on the charges trading in Indian Made Foreign Liquor.

Mobile phone seized from life convict in prison

Cuddalore: During a routine check on the cells of the Cuddalore Central Prison, the warders found a cell phone hidden in a meal plate on Tuesday. On enquiry it was found that Dhanapal, a life convict, had managed to get a cell phone and hide it in the meal plate.

Two arrested for possessing unlicensed arms

Cuddalore: The police today arrested two nari koravas namely Manikandan (25) and his brother Murugesan (23) on charges of possessing guns without licence. When sub-inspector Veerapandian, attached to the Neyveli Thermal Police Station, was doing his routine rounds he came across two persons shooting down birds at a lake near the Mine-I of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation. During interrogation the duo admitted that the weapons belonged to their uncle who had got licence.

Community clash: cases booked against 15 persons

The police on Monday booked cases against 15 persons in connection with the clashes that took place between two communities at Panangattu Colony near here on Sunday. The police sources said that what started as a drunken brawl at Soriyankuppam near Puducherry between two groups of youths hailing from Panangattu Colony and Unnamalai Chetti Chavadi flared up into a clash between two communities.

Unaccounted money seized

Cuddalore: A flying squad intercepted a mini-van on the Periya Kosapalayam-Thuraiyur highway near Thittakudi and seized Rs. 12 lakh unaccounted money on Friday. When the officials questioned driver Rajan, 42, and Manikandan travelling in the van, they said they were carrying the proceeds of cigarette sales to a wholesale dealer at Chidambaram. As they were not in possession of any sale document, the officials seized the money.

Unidentified youth cheats elderly man of Rs 60,000

Cuddalore: An unidentified youth cheated Durairaj (69) of Velavankuppam and took away Rs 60,000 in cash from him on Wednesday. Police sources said that Mr Durairaj went to a bank in Panruti to redeem some jewels that he had pledged. He was keeping Rs 60,000 in cash with him. When he was struggling to fill up the challan a youth approached him and offered to help. He then asked Mr. Durairaj to bring him some paste to set right a damaged currency note.

3 killed, 5 injured in blast at fireworks unit in Cuddalore

Cuddalore: Three persons were killed and five injured in a blast at a fireworks unit at Aadur Agaram near Kurinjipadi on Wednesday. M. Valli (40) of Ellappanpettai and Anjapuli (40) of East Colony in Aadur Agaram were thrown away to about 15 feet from a work shed and their charred bodies were found on the nearby farmland. Another worker Palaniammal (60) died on way to the Kurinjipadi government hospital.

Man found dead on riverbed

Cuddalore: A man was found dead with his neck slashed on the river bed of the Manimutharu at Vriddhachalam on Friday. The police later identified the body as that of K.Arulkumar (25) of Gandhi Nagar in Vriddhachalam. The police arranged for taking the body to hospital for post-mortem.
