Security stepped up for temple festival

90 kg ganja seized, 75-year-old man detained

Ramanathapuram: Organised Crime Intelligence Unit (OCIU) detained an old man with 90 kg of ganja and seized the contraband.Acting on a tipoff, an OCIU team raided Alaikattavalasai, a coastal hamlet at Irumeni near Uchipuli on Thursday and seized the ganja, packed in 45 packets, and detained M. Azhagarsamy (75) of Pandiyur.

Woman arrested for killing newborn

Ramanathapuram: Police arrested a 24-year-old woman on the charge of murdering a newborn baby and destroying evidence in Puduvalasai near here on Tuesday.  The police said Tamilselvi (24), mother of two-year-old boy, gave birth to a baby boy on Friday, but murdered the baby by slitting its throat as she had allegedly conceived the baby through an illicit relationship when her husband was in Dubai. She buried the body under a coconut tree near her house. However, when neighbours suspected foul play, she exhumed the body and buried it again in a burial ground close by on Monday.

Ramanathapuram Police arrest eight fake doctors

Ramanathapuram: In a joint operation with health and revenue departments, the district police have launched a crackdown on fake doctors and arrested eight quacks, including two Keralite siblings and a woman who have been ‘practising’ from two to 30 years. The joint operation was launched on Friday after Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan had a meeting with Collector K.

One arrested for violating bond

Ramanathapuram: The district police have arrested a person booked under section 107 of CrPC, for violating the bond he had executed for keeping peace for one year and detained him till the completion of the bond period. Acting on the orders of Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan last year, the police had invoked the provisions of section 107 and 122(b) of CrPC to deal with persons who commit breach of peace or disturb public tranquillity.

Ramanathapuram: The alleged suicide of a 16-year-old girl, after she eloped with a Dalit youth and was abandoned by her parents, turned out to be yet another honour killing in the district, with the police arresting her father on the charge of smothering her to death with a pillow while she was asleep.

Case against former minister

Ramanathapuram: The police have registered a case against former AIADMK minister V. Sathyamurthy, who is now in DMK, and Amma Peravai District joint secretary Ramamurthy for organising bullock cart race in violation of the Supreme Court order. The two, along with M.
