Serial rape, murder cases cracked

Villupuram: The police cracked serial rape and murder cases that occurred mainly in the Thiruvennainallur and Tirunavalur blocks of Villupuram district in the past three years. In this connection, police rounded up V. Mathialagan (29) of Parikkal, and A. Gurubalan (37) and M. Vadivelu (33), both from Adur, on Sunday. Superintendent of Police V. Vikraman told presspersons that their modus operandi was to target lonely women tending cattle in isolated places.

Rectified spirit seized

Villupuram: The Marakkanam police seized rectified spirit worth Rs 5 lakh and arrested one person for his attempt to smuggle the consignment on Wednesday night. The police on night patrol at the Alandur road junction got suspicious when a car abruptly halted some distance away from them. Three persons got down and scurried away. Police found 22 plastic cans of rectified spirit in the boot of the car.

Man held for smuggling liquor

Villupuram: The police today arrested Sivachandran (25) of Sandapettai in Thirukkoilur block on charges of smuggling liquor and impounded the car used for transporting the brew. Police sources said that Sivachandran drove the car at breakneck speed ignoring the signal of the security personnel at the Kengarampalayam checkpost. The police chased the vehicle and intercepted it. Six boxes containing 192 beer bottles were found in the boot of the car.

One arrested for carrying explosive devices

Villupuram: Police seized 100 detonators and 100 slurries during routine check at Alanguppam near Tindivanam on Friday. Police sources said that in this connection M. Muthukumaran (25), a resident of Mettu Street at Tindivanam, was arrested and the tractor-trailer used for transporting the explosive devices was impounded. The vehicle also carried a compressor machine. Since Muthukumaran did not have any valid documents, he was arrested.

Police foil bid to hijack container lorry

Villupuram: The police foiled a bid to hijack a container lorry on Sunday. It was carrying a consignment of imported oats worth Rs 3 crore. The cleaner Parthiban (26) of Karuvambakkam in Tindivanam block, was arrested. On Sunday, the container lorry, loaded with oats imported from Australia, was on its way to Naickenpalayam in Coimbatore district. It was driven by Krishnadas (32) of Athanur near Tindivanam.

Three arrested for assault

Villupuram: A group of persons waylaid a van in which Janakiraman (45), a farmer, and his friend Ramalingam (40), were travelling at Ariyanatham near Ulundurpet on Sunday, attacked them with sickles and inflicted bleeding injuries on them. The injured have been admitted to the Mundiyambakkam Government Medical College Hospital. Police have arrested three persons in this connection and are looking for 13 others.

Mock liquor unit detected, two held

Villupuram: In a surprise raid on a farmhouse at Gothandaramapuram in the Thirukkoilur block on Sunday, the police unearthed a spurious liquor manufacturing unit and arrested two persons. On a tip-off, the Superintendent of Police S. Manoharan sent the police team to the farmhouse, owned by Bhaskar, near Arakandanallur. It found illicit brew, labels of various brands of IMFL and empty bottles. David, 27, of Mugaiyur and Asirwatham, 27, of Arakandanallur were arrested.

5 injured as omni bus hits tanker

Villupuram: A gas tanker lorry developed a leak in the early hours on Friday after an omni bus hit it at Sheikh Hussainpet on the Chennai-Tiruchi Highway. Five persons, including bus driver Lakshmanan (27) of Ramanathapuram and passengers Qubra Begum (40) of Mudhukulathur, Najima (53) of Ilayankudi, Jayalakshmi (29) of Thiruvotriyur and her son Madheswaran (six) sustained injuries.

21 arrested for red sanders smuggling

Villupuram: Police on Wednesday rounded up a gang of 21 persons suspected to have been involved in smuggling red sanders.

Indian Made Foreign Liquor bottles seized

Villupuram: Revenue and police officials raided the house of Sakthivel in Murukkeri village on Tindivanam-Marakkanam road and seized as many as 195 cartons containing 5,800 Indian Made Foreign Liquor bottles on Monday night. Following a tip-off, a flying squad on poll duty along with police personnel went to Sakthivel’s place and seized the liquor bottles worth over Rs. 5 lakh hoarded there.
