Chennai Police search for Spanish man in diamond robbery bid

Chennai: The police are on the hunt for a man, suspected to be a Spainish national, who is alleged to be an aide of Jose Osorio, a Colombian, who was arrested on Sunday following a bid to steal expensive diamond jewels from an exhibition here.

Four bronze idols and conch shells seized

Tiruchi: A police team of Tiruvarur district seized metal idols and a couple of conch shells from a man near Thiruthuraipoondi on Monday. The accused Raman alias K. Ramakrishnan (38) was found possessing four bronze idols and a couple of conch shells in a bag. Three Amman idols of varying heights ranging from one feet to 10 centimetres and a small idol of Lord Vishnu were found in the alleged possession of Raman, who was residing  in Vedaranyam taluk, sources said.

Four arrested for murder

Coimbatore: The Sirumugai police arrested four men on murder charge. The police said that they had arrested Arun, Karuppasamy, Sakthivel and their friend Karthi on the charge of murdering Vasu Murugan (35) of Usilampatti on June 16. The police said that the four took Murugan in a car saying that the latter’s uncle wanted to meet him and while travelling, assaulted, then strangulated and finally disposed off his body in a quarry.

A.P. DGP offers police protection to telecos

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police J.V. Ramudu on Monday said that the telecom service providers, who were served notices in connection with the alleged phone-tapping by the Telangana Government, would be provided police protection against any threats. “If anybody threatens the telecom operators, they must feel free to lodge complaints with us. We can give them protection,” Mr.

Police take Maoist into custody

Dindigul: The Dindigul police produced Kannan alias Senthil, one of the Maoists nabbed in Coimbatore, before the Dindigul Judicial Magistrate Court II on Monday to be taken into its custody for interrogation. Plice said that he was one of the accused who escaped from a police encounter with Maoists on upper Kodaikanal hill in 2004. Maoist Navin Prasad was killed in that encounter.

Columbian national arrested for bid to steal diamonds

Chennai: The Teynampet police on Sunday arrested a Columbian national who attempted to steal a bag containing diamond jewellery from a car parked at a luxury hotel in Anna Salai. Police suspect that he could be involved in thefts in different countries. Police sources said Jose Osorio, believed to be his mid 30s, was spotted at a diamond exhibition held at the hotel .

Wearing of Helmets by 2-Wheeler Riders Compulsory From July 1

Chennai:  Two-wheeler riders in Tamil Nadu must wear helmets from July 1 or risk impounding of their driving license, according to a Madras High Court order.

Four arrested in hawala scam

Bengaluru: Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths raided a readymade garment shop in Chickpet and arrested four persons for running an inter-State hawala racket. Based on a tip-off, a team raided M.M. Garments in Mamulpet and arrested Mangilal Jain (53), Ramesh Kumat (49), Rana Ram (35) and Babulal Sutar (38), and recovered unaccounted cash amounting to Rs. 17,60,800.  They also recovered 3.160 kg of silver, which the men claimed to have received from a customer.

Duo arrested for posting pictures on WhatsApp messenger, Facebook

Two youth of Puducherry were arrested by Cuddalore District Police for posting picture that allegedly outraged religious sentiments in WhatsApp messenger and Facebook. The picture showing a youth resting his leg on a deity in a temple had gone viral in WhatsApp and Facebook. Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, Ariyankuppam, Puducherry were inscribed on the picture.

Four detained under Goondas Act

Dindigul: Four history-sheeters have been detained under Goondas Act, as recommended by Superintendent of Police A. Saravanan, here on Monday. The detainees were Stephen alias M. Stephen Joseph Raj (32) of Anumantharayankottai in Athoor block, S. Menaka Devi (27) of Aladipatti village in Pannaikadu and her two accomplices Siva alias S. Sokkanathan and A. Suresh (36) of Mela Anna Thoppu, Raja Mill Road, Madurai.
